If you have a PRO paper, you can now replace our assigned domain name with a custom domain for your paper.
When you created your paper, you were assigned a system generated URL for you paper in one of two formats: paper.li/twittername/##### (for Twitter) or paper.li/f-###### (for Facebook), where # is a unique id. A custom domain name allows you to replace our system generated name with a custom name you chose yourself.
What benefits are there to having a custom domain?
Having a custom domain is just one additional way to extend your branding and have a domain name that is more "user friendly". In addition, once you have set up your custom domain, you can add the following to your paper:
CSS styling: from header to footer, you can style your paper as you'd like with via a new CSS editor
Optional header & footer: don't like to dabble with code? Then you can simply hide the standard Paper.li header and footer with a click of the mouse
Favicon: extend your branding with a logo at the top of your browser tab
Google Adsense: monetize your hard work by adding targeted ads to your paper. To include Google Adsense in your paper, sign up here.
What are the drawbacks?
When you change the URL from the standard paper.li address to your custom domain URL, the number of shares for the paper will be re-set to zero. The number of shares is linked to a URL and we are not able to change this.
For some, the idea of setting up a custom domain might seem complicated, but it's not. We're here to help you. You decide on which registrar you wish to use and we can help you from there.
The "remember me" option found under your Account settings menu will no longer be functional.
If you already have a domain name that is being used, you may want to create a subdomain name (in the format, for example, news.yourdomainname.com) and point that subdomain to the paper.
1. Configure your domain or subdomain
You'll need to configure your domain or subdomain and your registrar will have instructions on how to do this. Depending on what you chose, you'll do one of the the following:
Three levels - If your domain looks something like news.mywebsite.com (example), point a CNAME record to paper.li (This is subdomain format.)
Two levels - If your domain looks something like mywebsite.com (example), point an A-record to 188.8.131.52
2. Wait 72 hours after registration with your DNS provider to test your domain on the paper.li site.
3. Enter your domain or subdomain name in the paper.li setting and test the configuration.
Go to the paper settings of your paper. Turn the custom domain slider to ON
Enter your new domain (e.g. mywebsite.com) or subdomain (e.g. blog.mywebsite.com). You should not enter the http or www in front of your domain name. Entering your new domain name in the field makes our system aware that your domain name will be used to reach your paper.
Example: If your domain name iswww.myname.com, simply enter myname.com in the text field.
Click "Test your domain." If the message says that the domain points to paper.li then you have configured your domain correctly with your provider.
4. Be sure to click to save the domain or subdomain name.
5. If you have already activated an automatic promo-post or tweet with your old URL, you must re-set the default text in your tweet or post in order for your new custom URL to be included in the next auto promote. To do so, go to Settings > Promotion & Emails and turn the activations switch(es) OFF and then back ON to reset your default tweet with the correct URL.
Do I need to change the nameservers for my domain?
No, just the A-record or CNAME record depending on levels in your domain.
What happens when someone visits my normal Paper.li URL?
They will automatically be redirected to your new custom domain.
Will the domain URL be reflected when I share the paper?
Yes. You will no longer being sharing the standard paper.li url, you will be sharing your custom domain url.
What will the Paper.li promotional tweet look like?
The promo tweet will carry your domain URL and link to your page.
What will the email notification look like?
The email newsletter will also carry your custom domain URL.
How will my paper be found on Google Search and others?
Your paper will be indexed in searches as soon as the engines crawl the new custom domain. Be sure you link your Paper.li sub-domain from the homepage of your Website to get the most out of your curated content.
What if I’m having trouble setting up a custom domain or subdomain?
