Source filters are a really effective way to narrow your focus and only pull in posts that meet your filter conditions. We also provide overall filters, to help with the general flow of content into your paper.
Add a source filter
A filter on Facebook, Twitter, or an RSS feed source can be added to identify more specific content or filter out posts containing key words. This is especially useful if you use keyword searches on Twitter.
There are no filters available for YouTube key word searches.
1. From your Paper Settings, click the Content tab.
2. Click on the to the right of the source, and choose Apply a filter.
3. A pop-up will appear, where you can enter keywords in one of the three fields. Enter words into the fields, putting quotes around exact phrases and separate all words/phrases by a space. Commas are not necessary, nor are the logical operators such as AND or OR. You do not need quotes around single words. Quotes are only necessary when you are looking for an exact phrase.
The three options are:
-
ALL of these words
Example: If you enter in the field "ALL of these words": , then we will look at all the posts or tweets and return only the content found in posts or tweets with ALL the words or phrases "swiss cow" AND "paper.li" AND "social media". When we filter against an RSS feed, we compare the words against the title of the article in the RSS feed.
-
ANY of these words
Example: If you enter in the field "ANY of these words":
, then we will look at all the posts or tweets and return only the content found in posts or tweets with ANY ONE of the words or phrases "swiss cow" OR "paper.li" OR "social media". When we filter against an RSS feed, we compare the words against the title of the article in the RSS feed.
-
NONE of these words
Example: If you enter in the field "NONE of these words":
, then we will look at all the posts or tweets and return only the content found in posts or tweets that do not have ANY of the words or phrases "swiss cow" OR "paper.li" OR "social media". When we filter against an RSS feed, we compare the words against the title of the article in the RSS feed.
4. When you're done, don't forget to click .
Add Overall Filters
You can add more generalized filters to your content, creating rules for our content fetching system to follow. To do this, navigate to your Paper Settings > Content, then scroll down to "Content Filters."
From their you can choose to only enable Paper.li verified "Safe Sites," filter overall content by a specific region, or time of content creation, and even created custom overall filters.
