Ability to rename topics or create new ones

    Related: more categories, more granular....

For example Arts & Entertainment is way too broad, brings up celebrity sightings and movies... leaving little space (or a lot of editing) for museums, galleries.

Leisure is also too broad: please create a travel category

My use case is that I have articles focused on Mac and Windows. Generally everything falls under "Technology" which is not so great. Would like if I could manually categorize if the ability to automatically do it is beyond the content engine's current ability.

Having the same problem with Leisure: it's the closest there is to travel, but Travel needs its own category.

We wish there was a Transportation category too :-)

Ps - I have a couple of personal papers too, and find Arts & Entertainment too broad.... Picasso and movie stars are just so far apart....

Customisable topics would be great! It'd be really useful to be able to change the titles of the standard "Education, Leisure etc."

I use the pro version and I wish that I could rename and manually manage the 'topics'. Please consider, thanks.

    Hello all,

I just wanted to let you all know we are listening and the requests for more flexibility regarding the topic categories is on our 'to-do' list of improvements.  Unfortunately, I can't give you a more precise date as we are working on other areas of improvement as well.

    Best, Julia

Agree not only with original comment, but with what Jerry G. J. Gouw says about manually managing topics. There seems to be no way to move a story that's been miscategorized to a better topic.

I would agree -- the ability to enter one's own topic sections is a major missing functionality here.  All in all the concept of paper.li is wonderful, but for niche newpapers, which I imagine most of these are, being stuck with only general sections is really limiting.  I hope that this functionality, which I can't imagine is that difficult to engineer, is a top priority for addition.

    Dear all,

The ability to better curate content and fine tune the topics is top on our list of priorities.  We are currently working on an improvement to our topic areas. Thanks for patience.

Any update on this? I see that it's been planned since June, and in September it was stated that it's still being planned, but this seems a very needed fix, especially for niche and personal papers.

Hi, sorry for the delayed response.  Yes, there will be an improvement around the topics scheduled to deploy around the beginning of the year if all goes according to plan!  Specifically, the idea is to make the topics much more granular.

Please be sure to allow the hiding of topics altogether, the ability to rename them, or at least include Historical Fiction as one of the topics. My paper's scope is limited to historical fiction authors, as well as  history in the news.

    @Thelma,

Thanks for your comment.  The ability to exclude a topic is already available.  When you de-select a Covered Topic, the topic section (and the content that we assigned into that category) will no longer appear on your paper.

As for excluding topics, does that address your need?

The ability to rename a topic is currently being discussed.

Please consider adding a job/career/hiting category for listings or related content. Right now jobs go to every category.

    Thank you.

Instead of pre-defined generic topic titles (eg Business, Technology etc) ... allow users to write their own topic titles

for eg I want to create a paper for the different styles of dancing that I am interested in, thus I want to create a paper with the various dances as the topic titles

Would it be possible to add a new Construction category? Currently stories about construction in my feed aren't showing up under any category

Any idea when we will be able to add our own topic categories? I'm producing an Engineering newspaper and need very different categories from the ones provided. I've removed all of them and am just using "Stories" for now.

I am pulling content from my own blog. When I open the paper my content is appearing under categories such as health, technology, business, and environment. How did paper.li determine that my content belonged in those categories?

In response to Julia Yaziji's comment: you cannot just simply de-select a topic as easily as you stated above as there is simply no option for this. Every preset topic still appears with no way to "de-select" and prevent it from appearing on your news page. Can you please elaborate on this?

@Site Marker: No problem.  Glad it's working for you now.

@Joanne:  For any article, no matter where it is found (i.e. your blog or nytimes.com, etc), our platform assigns the article into a topic category by looking at key words.  You can change the category by entering edit mode and re-assigning the article to another topic.

See  Edit (delete, reposition, or blacklist) content on your paper and under the section "New! Reassign articles to another topic".  I hope that helps.

I love the recent changes for navigation by putting the topics at the top. But it's meaningless unless we have the ability to tailor the topics. It looks like it has been planned for a while now. When will it happen? It's a key change that will help a lot.

    Hi Paper.li folks,

This ability to edit Topics would be extremely useful for our purposes as well, especially given that there are only 6 possible Topics/Paper.  We can see this is a "planned" request, but is there any idea of when this might come into being?  At this moment I'm trying to gauge how much energy to put into a workaround system.

    Thanks!

Yes, currently there is no category for Editorials/Opinion section. It is an important feature which is needed.

Yes, thumbs up for the option to either rename current topics/categories, or add new ones. That would be a great addition to the current structure.
